An island fridge is a free-standing, chest-style display cabinet placed mid-aisle and accessed from all sides, running at chilled temperatures. An island freezer is the same format running below 0 °C. Retailers often use the two names for the same unit; the temperature range on the spec sheet is what tells them apart.
“Island” describes where the cabinet sits, not how cold it runs. An island unit stands on its own in the middle of the sales floor instead of against a wall, and shoppers can reach it from every side. It can stand alone, or several units can be joined into a longer row.
“Fridge” and “freezer” describe the temperature. In commercial refrigeration the working line is 0 °C:
| Term | What it tells you | Typical temperature band |
| Island fridge | Mid-floor chest-style cabinet for chilled goods | Above 0 °C (Senlis chilled cabinets run at 2–8 °C) |
| Island freezer | Mid-floor chest-style cabinet for frozen goods | Below 0 °C (Senlis island freezers reach −20 to −25 °C) |
The 2–8 °C figure is the range Senlis uses for its chilled lines, such as commercial refrigerators in chill mode and air curtain cabinets. Other suppliers may define “chilled” slightly differently.

Search for “island fridge” and many of the product pages that come up are island freezers. Typical retail listings use the two terms interchangeably on the same product, and almost none explain which models actually run above 0 °C.
There are a few reasons for this:
For an importer, the result is practical. A product title is not a specification. If you order an “island fridge” for dairy and a −25 °C freezer arrives, the mistake was made at the quote stage, and the shipping documents won’t correct it.
Senlis sells its island line as freezers. Two models list an upper limit that reaches into the chilled band:
| Model | Type | External size (W×D×H, mm) | Listed temperature range |
| SLS-PD1200 | Flat Island Freezer | 1400×650×910 | −20 to 8 °C |
| SLS-SD1400 | Deep Island Freezer | 1400×650×870 | −23 to 8 °C |
For comparison, the other two models in the range stay at or below 0 °C:
| Model | Type | External size (W×D×H, mm) | Listed temperature range |
| SLS-YD1200 | Arc Island Freezer | 1200×765×860 | −25 to 0 °C |
| SLS-ZD1860 | Combo Island Cabinet | 1860×810×800 | −25 to 0 °C |
All four models share:
All models are available as OEM/ODM orders, with options for voltage (110 V / 220 V / 380 V), plug standard (US / EU / UK), branding and manual language.
Here is what the 8 °C upper limit does and does not tell you. It means the listed range overlaps the 2–8 °C chilled band. It does not, on its own, confirm that a particular unit will hold a stable chilled setpoint for your specific products over a full trading day. If chilled operation is your main use, say so in your inquiry and we will confirm the setting for that model.

Ignore the product title. Check these five points instead:
A range such as −23 to 8 °C makes it tempting to buy one model and switch it between frozen and chilled stock across seasons or promotions. This can work, but it carries two risks that buyers often miss.
The first is operational. Staff have to reset the cabinet and empty it completely each time it changes use. In a multi-store chain, that becomes a procedure someone has to follow correctly in every store.
The second is planning. If most of the year’s volume is chilled, a freezer-first cabinet may not be the right tool at all. Senlis’s open-front air curtain cabinets run at 2–8 °C and are built for chilled self-service display. The trade-off is that they are not an island format, so you lose access from all four sides.
Island cabinets suit frozen impulse lines and promotion bays in a wide aisle. They are a poor fit when:
Q: Does Senlis make a dedicated island fridge?
A: Not under that name. The island line is sold as freezers. The SLS-PD1200 and SLS-SD1400 list ranges up to 8 °C, so tell us your target temperature and we will confirm whether the model suits chilled use.
Q: Can one island cabinet hold frozen and chilled products at the same time?
A: The island line does not list multi-zone control, so plan for one temperature per cabinet.
Q: Are island freezers and chest freezers the same thing?
A: They share the lift-or-slide lid format. Island units are designed for mid-floor placement with access from every side and can be joined back-to-back or side-by-side. Chest freezers typically sit against a wall.
Q: How much does an island fridge or freezer cost?
A: Pricing is quoted per project. Request a quote for your model, quantity, and destination market.
Q: Can the units be built for my market’s voltage and plug?
A: Yes. Options include 110 V, 220 V or 380 V, with US, EU or UK plugs.
